What is a Business Activity Statement (BAS)?

A BAS is a compulsory report that businesses are required to lodge with the ATO, outlining GST, PAYG, fringe benefit tax and other tax obligations. Most Australian businesses need to lodge a BAS at least quarterly; however, this will vary based on your annual GST turnover. The ATO uses this information to calculate tax owed. Our team at All About Bookkeeping FNQ will liaise with the ATO on your behalf to ensure your BAS forms are accurate, lodged on time and that you're meeting your tax obligations.

It is also important to declare your company’s liabilities under BAS provisions—and we’ll claim any GST refunds and maximise other entitlements. For prompt and efficient BAS lodgement, as well as professional advice on understanding and interpreting the ATO’s requirements, make an appointment today. Frequently Asked Questions

  • What information do I need to include in my BAS?

Your BAS should include all relevant information relating to your business’s activity for the reporting period. This includes income, GST collected and paid, expenses, PAYG withholding and business PAYGI. Business owners should ensure they have their quarterly paperwork gathered and organised for ease of lodgement.

  • How do I ensure effective record keeping?

    • Keep track of all sales and purchases, including GST, by using accounting software or manual records.
    • Make sure you keep receipts, invoices and other documents that support the information in your records—including bank statements, contracts, delivery dockets and emails.
    • If you use accounting software, back up records regularly.
    • Keep your records in a safe place where you can find them easily—whether electronic or in paper form.
    • Stay up to date with your record keeping. Don’t fall behind—it will be harder to catch up later.
  • What are the due dates for BAS lodgement?

Lodgement dates depend on the frequency of your lodgments. For quarterly lodgers, the due dates are 28 October (for the period 1 July to 30 September), 28 February (for the period 1 October to 31 December), 28 April (for the period 1 January to 31 March) and 28 July (for the period 1 April to 30 June).

  • What happens if I don’t lodge my BAS on time?

If you don't lodge your BAS on time, the ATO may charge you a late lodgement penalty and issue a compulsory payment plan. The ATO may also charge you interest on any taxes outstanding. For help to lodge on time, contact your local BAS agent.
